CD review by Roger Zee (07/21/18)

If you like your music Seventies Rock-Hard with lots of phat, juicy, Les Paul hooks, with a long-haired, tough male singer and a sultry, to-die-for, female backup vocalist, you're gonna love the debut CD by the Joe Nott Band, "No More Lies!" Available on Spotify, YouTube, and CD Baby. Picture Led Zeppelin meets Heart meets The Rolling Stones. Produced and written by Joe Nott, the record includes Nott (guitar, vocals); Glenn Sacchi, Vito Luizzi (drums); Maryann Renza (vocals); Paul Bisbano, Seth Masten, Vinnie Leggiere (bass); and Harley Fine (keys).

The album relates a series of relationships that start well but end badly. Take the funky/sexy creeper, "Shortchanged." The singer finds himself lost and alone when his woman suddenly disappears. Eerily enough, Maryanne Renza echoes each vocal line in best Ann Wilson fashion. Renza steps to the fore on the big riff, Zeppelinesque, "Heavy Load." "When it hits, I never want to come down." Copy that! Nott crafts an amazing guitar lead that sounds uncannily like an Irish flute. He stretches out even more on the slinky instrumental "Traveler." On the mid tempo title track, Maryann Renza proclaims "No More Lies" while Joe Nott answers "I'm on to your game!" In "Shotdown," our hero gets dumped yet again. "Shotdown like never before. I'm losing all control. Blinded, never saw it coming. She turned on me once again." The heavy, spacey, mesmerizing ballad, "Wrapped in Chains" finds Nott singing "This will be the day when there's nothing left to lose. You can feel me deep inside you." The swirling, shimmering guitars flow down the drain in a whirlpool of emotion. The record closes with the appropriately titled, "Fade," a delightful, solo Daneletro 12 string romp.

So refreshing to hear a guitarist more interested in tone and tasteful playing rather than shredding. If you've recently gone through an unexpected or nasty breakup, why drown your sorrows in alcohol? Just play "No More Lies" over and over. Best part - you can't wear it out!
